Miller's Diner Stops Train

Although Railroad Engineers and Conductors often stopped their trains along the track behind Miller’s Diner to enjoy breakfast or lunch, one day in October 1996, it was a stop that became legendary, or at least memorable...

It was about 3pm when the Engineer and Conductor stopped their train, and headed for lunch.  But the train was about six cars too long.  Or, they stopped just six cars too soon.
They had gotten word to wait while congestion cleared on the tracks ahead, so they broke for lunch and ambled to Miller’s, about a half-mile west of the crossing.
Meanwhile, back at Route 829, crossing signals were flashing, crossing gates were blocking traffic, and with the nearest detour a winding seven miles away the backup was starting.  The Train didn’t move for 15 minutes.
It wasn’t until a passing police officer, from nearby Mount Union, happened into Miller’s and found the pair that the Engineer hustled back to the locomotive and pulled the train ahead.
A little while later, the conductor came walking up the tracks with their food.
When it comes to Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code, though, hunger is not a defense, not when a crossing is blocked beyond the maximum five minutes.
(The Engineer & Conductor faced traffic fines and costs totaling $94 apiece.)

That’s why we say:
We’re “Train-Stoppin’ Good!”
